About Power Mukisa

Hi, I'm Power a software engineer, product thinker, and startup founder with over 10 years of experience building systems that scale across markets and matter to people.

I was born and raised in Uganda, where curiosity first led me to tinker with electronics and write code before I had a reliable internet connection. That same drive took me across three continents, earning master's degrees from UC Berkeley (Development Practice, with a minor in Computer Science) and Westcliff University (Engineering Management), while building and contributing to technology at both startups and high-growth companies.

Professional Background

I've built and scaled backend systems in fintech, AI infrastructure, and health tech, supporting everything from real-time money transfers in the U.S. to financial services in emerging markets. Most recently at Altruist, I led engineering for money movement systems, including integrations with Plaid, FIS, and Wells Fargo, handling millions in financial transactions. I also designed distributed workflows using Kafka and Temporal, and collaborated across product and compliance to improve customer onboarding and reliability.

Earlier at Tala, I built backend services across multiple markets, wrote orchestration layers in Kotlin and Go, and scaled QA infrastructure to support millions of mobile users. I also led QA teams across Kenya and India, growing test coverage by 80%.

As a founding engineer at HealthInspecta, I built a cross-platform mobile app to help users track and improve eating habits with AI-powered feedback. The system, built in Flutter and FastAPI, currently supports hundreds of active users and integrates with Azure Blob and RabbitMQ for real-time sync.

Milestones & Highlights

  • 🏦 Led development of core transfer and cashiering systems at Altruist, helping scale operations to support rapid growth in client accounts.
  • 📄 Built an e-signature orchestration system with Temporal, automating over 20,000 onboarding workflows with Dropbox Sign APIs.
  • ⚙️ Created a test automation tool called Gezako, inspired by challenges faced at Tala, which was later adopted internally to manage QA across teams.
  • 📡 Prototyped a hardware-based malaria intervention as part of my Berkeley capstone — using ultrasonic frequencies to repel mosquitoes in rural Uganda.
  • 🌍 Worked across 5 countries and on remote teams distributed across Africa, India, Europe, and the U.S.
  • 💼 Collaborated with cross-functional teams, from data scientists and product managers to compliance officers and designers to deliver full-stack, production-ready solutions.

What Drives Me

I'm fascinated by how technology intersects with systems of trust, financial systems, public health, identity, access and how the right infrastructure can shift opportunity at scale. I care deeply about building tools that are observable, reliable, and rooted in real user needs, not just abstractions.

Today, I'm focused on opportunities where backend engineering, AI tools, and emerging market context collide and I'm especially interested in helping global teams build from anywhere, for anywhere.
